Community Profile

Mayhill is an unincorporated community in Otero County, New Mexico. It is surrounded by the Lincoln National Forest on the eastern slope of the Sacramento Mountains located at the intersection of James Canyon and the Rio Penasco River, approximately 17 miles east of Cloudcroft, NM; our small community is nestled between the towns of Artesia, NM 70 miles to the east and Alamogordo, NM 38 miles west of Mayhill. The population of Mayhill is approximately 56, however the population of the surrounding rural area of roughly 850 square miles is well above that. John 4:35 “… Behold, I say unto you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, for they are white already to harvest.”

The elevation of Mayhill is 6580 feet; our mountain setting is home to elk, deer, and turkey. Mayhill has a lovely hotel/café, post office, convenience store, gas station, and gift shop.

The students of our mountain communities of Mayhill, Weed, Pinon, Sacramento, Timberon, and Cloudcroft have the option of attending school at Cloudcroft Municipal Schools (K-12) just 17 miles west of Mayhill or Penasco Schools, grades K-6, located approximately 21 miles east of Mayhill.
